When you picture a British safari, Longleat in Wiltshire is one of the classic icons. It’s more than just animals behind fences—it’s drive-through reserves, walking trails, boat rides, a stately house, mazes, immersive habitats—and all surrounded by the beautiful Longleat Estate. If you want a day that mixes adventure, nature, showmanship, and family fun, this is it.
What to See & Do
Longleat offers a huge variety. Here are the main highlights:
- Drive-Through Safari This is the heart of Longleat: drive through zones with lions, tigers, rhinos, giraffes, deer, wolves, and more. There’s “Monkey Mayhem” (where macaques roam near/over vehicles), My ultimate favourite is the giraffe part!
- Walking Safari & Animal Encounters Once you’re out of the car, there are lots of habitats to explore on foot: Jungle Kingdom (meerkats, anteaters, etc.), the lorikeet aviary where you can hand-feed birds, Animal Adventure with smaller/more elusive creatures (porcupines, fennec foxes) and more. With multiple locations you can spend a small fee to feed animals.
- Adventure & Attractions For families (especially with kids), there’s plenty beyond animals: Hedge Maze, Longleat Railway, Adventure Castle, Jungle Cruise etc.
- Longleat House & Estate The historic stately house and gardens are part of the charm, so if time allows, include a visit. The setting is beautiful; walking around the estate gives a chance to breathe between more exciting animal encounters.
